Demand Access to Higher Education for All Students. We are still calling on everyone to continue making phone calls to our legislators and take action to ensure that NC does not become the first state to close its doors to children of immigrants. Please view our take action page to see how you can continue to help, including adding your signature to our new petition.
Background:
On November 7, 2007 the NC Community College System Office released a memo stating that all community colleges in the state are now required to admit undocumented students!
Since then, several key leaders have come out in support of this change. Both Governor Mike Easley and former President of the NC Community College System, Martin Lancaster, made a strong public statement in support of the new policy.
This was an amazing and hugely positive development for our students, our community, and our state!
But the policy change came under attack and on May 13, 2008 the NC Community College system changed its admissions policy to reflect the General Counsel's advice to no longer admit undocumented students at any of the 58 schools in the state. This is a great set back. Adelante sent a press release in response to the current change.
Those that have spoken out in support of access to higher education for children of immigrants are receiving email and voice mail threats. It's important that we drown out those threats with words or thanks.
There is also talk that the NC General Assembly will consider passing legislation in the 2008 session that would bar undocumented students in our state from pursuing a higher education. If this were to happen we would become the first state to close our doors to higher education to a specific group of people, creating a permanent underclass in our state.
This is about access to our colleges NOT about in-state tuition. Access to our colleges will increase the state's collective productivity and economic growth by preparing an educated workforce. Let's work together to STOP any effort to restrict or deny education to certain groups of North Carolina students!
