DREAM Act calls needed Now – Act Nov 23 and Nov 29

November 23, 2010 By NCJustice Leave a Comment

Dear DREAMers, Dream Supporters and Allies,

The Adelante Education Coalition asks you to join us in support of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minor Act (DREAM Act). After years of hard work and activism in support of this legislation, we now have a window of opportunity to make the DREAM Act a reality. During the past weeks we have seen several national leaders taking a stand in support of the DREAM Act. On November 16th, President Obama met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and promised to work towards the passage of the DREAM Act before the end of the 111th Congress. Recently, both Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Pelosi have stated that they plan on bringing the DREAM Act up for a vote, either as standalone legislation or as an attachment to a bill after the Thanksgiving recess. Military leaders have also expressed their support for this legislation and the Department of Defense has included the DREAM Act in its strategic plan for 2011. Most importantly, for a decade, and especially during the last couple of months, we have seen DREAM Act students taking action; many of them have put their safety and health at risk to urge their representatives to take action.

We believe now it’s the time for North Carolina leaders to come together and take collaborative action in support of the DREAM Act. The Adelante Education Coalition has decided to take a stand in support of this important legislation by organizing two call-in days, on November 23rd and November 29th, and by organizing a letter endorsement campaign in support of the DREAM Act which will be sent to our NC Senators and House Representatives.

*The goal of these ‘call-in days’ is to generate hundreds of calls to both NC Senatorsand the 7 key House targets [Rep. Butterfield (D-1), Rep. Etheridge (D-2), Rep. McIntyre (D-7), Rep. Kissell (D-8), Rep. Shuller (D-11) and Rep. Miller (D-13)]**. *

*Senator Hagan 202-224-6342| Senator Burr (202) 224-3154 *

*Rep. Etheridge (202) 225-4531 |Rep.Miller (202) 225-3032*

*Rep. Butterfield (252)291-0828 |Rep. McIntyre (202) 225-2731*

*Rep. Kissell (202) 225-3715|Rep. Schuler(202) 225-6401*

Sample script:

“Hi my name is ______, I am calling from _(city & zip code)_ to ask___(Sen. Hagan, Sen. Burr, Rep. Miller or Rep. Etheridge etc. )__ to vote ‘YES’ for the DREAM Act when it comes up for a vote. Undocumented students deserve an opportunity to get an education and give back to our community. Thank you.”

About Adelante — Adelante focuses on education issues affecting Latino and migrant students and their families in North Carolina. The coalition is a collaboration among nonprofit organizations that focus on advocacy and public policy, community organizing, and grassroots support.
